Warmer Temperatures & Some Much Needed Rain!
Brandon Hunter
For May 20, 2026
The spring temps are finally starting to warm up and the cooler nights are hopefully behind us. It still seems like the wind doesn’t want to let up with only a few calm days. We are finally getting some much-needed rain this week that will hopefully be enough to help some of these drought conditions. Fish are on the move and making their way offshore. Here’s a rundown. Lake Conditions and What's Happening on the Lake Water Temp: Mid ... Continue Reading...
Cold Fronts Cause Some Crappie to Delay Spawning
Doug Wynn
For May 8, 2026
Hello from the Skeeter Solera. Wind and cold have been the be key elements lately. Kentucky Lake is still clear and a foot below summer pool. The rains we had earlier in the week did little to change either of those conditions. I am getting concerned about the numbers of crappie we are cleaning that are still holding eggs. Stable water levels, in my mind, should have made for good spawn conditions but these one-after-another cold fronts may ... Continue Reading...

For May 6, 2026
Catfish are on the prowl. Just this week several success stories are coming in from anglers tying into some hefty stringers as the fish head shallow to rocky banks for spawning. After some cool snaps recently that sort of paused the active spawning spree of bluegill and catfish the game is back on in full force. Early May’s full moon sort of triggered the spawning phases of bluegill, shellcracker and catfish along the shallow areas of ... Continue Reading...
Warm Spring Has Moved Spawning Phases Up
Scott McGlinchey

March was warmer than usual and April has been hot. Our spring season is two weeks ahead of normal. The morning water temperature was 61/62 April 1st and normally it doesn’t get there until April 15th. Barkley is usually a week behind Kentucky Lake due to the Cumberland River being cooler. During March and early April I had some great days catching crappies and bass. All of the bass have been relatively shallow and the crappies have been ... Continue Reading...
Crappie Sizes Are Looking Excellent
John Morgan
For February 28, 2026
It's probably too soon to call this past week spring, but with temps near 75 degrees it sure did feel like it. Last week was a great week of fishing with several trips ending in limits. I believe the average size of our crappie is better than it's been any of the past 34 years that I've guided on this lake. We saw fish as large as 2.5 pounds all the way down to 3 inches long. After the ice got off the lake, it seems that a lot of the crappie ... Continue Reading...
