Second Full Moon Signals Bluegill Spawn/Heavy Rains Enter the Picture

Steve McCadams

For May 22, 2026

Two full moons in May is a bit unusual but that’s okay with bluegill anglers who are reaping the benefits. After hitting the shallows early this spring and making an aggressive spawning run in late April and early May the bluegill are about to return to active spawning phases. Their second surge is underway as May 31 brings another full moon and that will trigger bluegill and some redear to return to spawning beds. Kentucky Lake’s ... Continue Reading...

Summer Patterns Starting on Kentucky Lake

Doug Wynn

For May 22, 2026

Hey folks from the Skeeter Solera. We've been needing rain for some time. As usually happens, Mother Nature waited until a holiday weekend to try to eliminate our rain deficit. Ky Lake is at summer pool and clear. I was at Dale Hollow Lake several days ago and it is 10 feet BELOW summer pool. We can be thankful we aren’t dealing with that.  The last couple of weeks have seen us pick up some giant crappie, lots of nice crappie, white ... Continue Reading...

Lake Conditions and What's Happening on the Lake Water Temp: Mid ... Continue Reading...

Warm Spring Has Moved Spawning Phases Up

Scott McGlinchey

For April 16, 2026

March was warmer than usual and April has been hot. Our spring season is two weeks ahead of normal. The morning water temperature was 61/62 April 1st and normally it doesn’t get there until April 15th. Barkley is usually a week behind Kentucky Lake due to the Cumberland River being cooler. During March and early April I had some great days catching crappies and bass. All of the bass have been relatively shallow and the crappies have been ... Continue Reading...

Crappie Sizes Are Looking Excellent

John Morgan

For February 28, 2026

It's probably too soon to call this past week spring, but with temps near 75 degrees it sure did feel like it. Last week was a great week of fishing with several trips ending in limits. I believe the average size of our crappie is better than it's been any of the past 34 years that I've guided on this lake. We saw fish as large as 2.5 pounds all the way down to 3 inches long. After the ice got off the lake, it seems that a lot of the crappie ... Continue Reading...
