Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley Fishing Report
Feb 22, 2017
Air Temperature: Low 56 High 70
Water Temperature: Low 52 High 55
Water Elevation: 354.7' ( 354' Winter pool)
Water Clarity: 2' to 3' visibility (green stain little dirty)
The calendar says it's still winter, but the fish, the lake, the weather, the critters, and I say it's more like mid March! This "early spring" caught me off guard, but I've been guiding a little lately.
We've caught some extra big Crappie, some chunky Largemouth, lots of Yellow Bass, and a few Bluegill the last few days. Some of the fish are coming real shallow, yet I believe most of the fish I've seen on the graph are 14' to 18' deep. If this weather pattern holds up another week like it's supposed to, we may have spawning Crappie the end of next week!?
Notes on Action: The bite has been a little slow overall but frantic in short spurts. The size of the fish has been good. Mostly 12" to 15" fish with several 2 Lbers.
Where to Fish: Catching fish shallow on wood cover especially on dark rocky banks. Also catching fish suspended over brush piles in 10' to 20' of water.
What to Use: We've been catching them on 1/16 oz to 3/32 oz jigs casting. A 1 1/2" to 2" tube, curly tail, or shad body has been working well. Catching them on a wide variety of colors: green, pink, chartreuse, white, orange, purple, blue, and yellow have all worked.
Notes on Action: Fairly steady action with a good shot at a lifetime big fish. The bass are never heavier than they are right now!
Where to Fish: We've been catching our fish in less than 4' of water from the back of bays to the main lake. Some are suspended over deep water, I'm sure bass can still be caught deeper on main lake points.
What to Use: Jerk baits, crankbaits, jigs, and Alabama rigs are producing.
I have plenty of openings this next 10 days so if you'd like to enjoy this early spring weather and catch some quality fish give me a call at 270-354-6017.
Thanks for reading my report.
