WATER LEVEL AT KENTUCKY LAKE DAM: 356.66
WATER TEMP: 70 DEGREES
The lake is about 2.5 feet above winter pool which is about 2 feet below normal for this date in April. The water clarity is lightly stained to clear with little current the last week. The fishing the past 2 weeks has been fairly consistent and I would rate all species as good to excellent. The Bluegill and the Red Ear have been fantastic with the size running way above normal for both of these feisty battlers. The White Bass have turned on recently with 2 of my guides recording limit catches the last 3 days running. The Channel Cats have begun their spawning activity and are producing large amounts of tasty fillets and unbelievable fights on light tackle fished in shallow water for our whisker-fishing clients. The Smallmouth have started to show up in the places they usually haunt this time of year and we have caught several fish from 3-5 lbs. recently and plenty of fish in the 1 lb. to 2 lb. range. The Largemouth have been very consistent in the last 10 days with fish being taken both shallow and deep with our largest being 7lbs. 9ozs. On 4/25 we went Crappie fishing for the first time in about 2 weeks and were pleasantly surprised with a catch of 30 fish with some of the fish pushing 2 lbs.
LARGEMOUTH BASS:
The Largemouth spawn is 60% complete with post-spawn fish starting to migrate back to the secondary points, creek channel ledges, and shallow gravel bars in the bays and on the main lake. Carolina rigs, jig/trailer combinations, ¾ oz. spinner-baits, and deep running crank-baits have been the best producing baits. Power fishing is how I would describe the best pattern to catch some Kentucky Lake monsters at the present, concentrate on throwing large deep running crank-baits, ¾ to 1oz. spinner-baits, spoons, and 4-5 inch swim-baits on creek channel and main lake ledges, the numbers will decrease but the size of Bass caught will increase considerably. We have had several very successful trips recently with numbers in the 50’s and 60’s being caught consistently. Today I had a client catch 2 fish on a DD22 on a main lake gravel bar on the same cast and his partner catch a 3 pounder at the same time. The fish are starting to bunch up after the spawn and will continue this pattern for the next 4-5 weeks. Two days ago we got on a school of Largemouth and caught 9 fish from 3-5 lbs. without moving the boat. If you want to experience some of the best ledge fishing of the year the next 6 weeks is the time to book your trips with “Kentucky Lakes Finest Guides”!
SMALLMOUTH BASS: The Smallies have completed their spawn and are moving back to the main lake points, gravel bars, and ledges. The best producing baits have been Carolina rigged Baby Brush Hogs, Finesse Worms, and Centipedes by Zoom in the colors of Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Seed, and June Bug fished in 12-22 feet of water on the structure mentioned above.
CRAPPIE: The Crappie we caught last week looked as if they had been through a war after their spawning activity, but were surprisingly aggressive taking 1/8 oz. jigs with Chartreuse and Blue Pearl twister tails cast to Crappie structure we dropped in 8-14 feet of water. These fish will continue to feed up after their spawn for the next few weeks and move deeper as the water warms.
BLUEGILL/REDEAR: The fishing has been simply fantastic and the size of the fish is running larger for Red Ear Sunfish than I have seen in 23 years of guiding. We have had some days where we have caught over 200 hundred fish in a day! Judging by the condition of the fish we are catching I would guess to have 15-20 days of the spawn still left for the season. I fried a mess up last night and there is no better eating than fresh Gills and Red Ear caught that day!
WHITE BASS: The Whites are on a tear recently with 2 of my guides catching limits in 2 hours for 3 days running and then fishing for Gills or Cats the remainder of the day. All of the fish are being taken on #2 or #3 Mepp’s Spinners fished on creek or river channel ledges in 8-18 feet of water.
CHANNEL CATFISH: The cooler weather has slowed down the spawning activity, but the last few days have shown improvement with one of my guides filling a 72 quart cooler yesterday fishing rock structure with slip corks in 4-8 ft. of water. The best baits were leech/shrimp combos and night crawlers.
