The Campaign for Forts Henry and Donelson involved navigating almost 70 miles of rivers and roads, as well as coordinating thousands of troops, a river fleet, and almost a dozen commanders. Fighting took place in multiple areas over a sizable portion of land and on the water. This complex campaign skyrocketed Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant to fame and marked the beginning of the end for the Confederacy in the western theater.

This "Battlefield in a Box" program is an interactive visual program designed to allow visitors to participate in telling the story. Visitors attending the program can expect to better understand what took place and where it happened while having a memorable experience! The program is open to groups and people of all ages and is an excellent program for families.

It's summer, the days are long, hot, and humid. How did people in the 1850's stay cool and still manage to accomplish their daily farm tasks? Come out and learn about how farm life revolved around simple tricks and methods of cooling off so farmers could avoid over heating in the hot summer sun. Sample some lemon aid or Switchel. The 19th century form of sports drink to rehydrate during long hot days in the sunshine.

To defend Fort Donelson, Confederates used soldiers and enslaved people to construct trenches along several ridge lines close to the fort and the town of Dover. Along multiple high points they placed cannons to guard approaches along creek beds. Two of the overlooked but important batteries were Maney's and Graves'. Both guarded Indian Creek, and some of the hardest fighting of the campaign took place there on the afternoon of February 13, 1862.

Join a Ranger on the 3rd Saturday of the month to go on a .6-mile roundtrip hike. Explore the events of Brigadier General John A. McClernand's attack on Maney's Battery that became the most controversial Union attack at Fort Donelson. The attack failed and brush fires burned wounded and dead Union soldiers. Was this attack, as later reported by Ulysses S. Grant in his memoirs, carried out "without orders or authority," or, according to John McClernand, was it carried out "within the spirit of your order…"? Attend the program to learn about this overlooked part of the battle for Fort Donelson!

Please be aware that while the hike is short, the hill is very steep and uneven. Please wear sturdy closed-toed shoes and be prepared to go up several hundred feet in elevation.

The Dover Hotel, constructed between 1853-1855, was a witness to the booming days of river boat traffic and was the meeting site for one of the most important surrenders during the American Civil War. Join Park staff as they tell the story of the Dover Hotel and the events that the building witnessed throughout its life as a hotel, hospital, and meeting place.

In the 1850s, leather was a staple good that was used to make sturdy shoes, saddles, bags, and even hinges on your windows in a pinch. Although leather can last a very long time, it still occasionally needs to be replaced, maintained, repaired - or even turned into something to sell. An important source of food for the families of the 1850s was the garden. The garden provided a variety of different fruits and vegetables that supplemented the staples they could buy and trade for at the local market. An interpreter will be available today in at least one of the two major food hotspots on our farm, the garden and the kitchen. Weaving, sewing, quilting... What do all of these crafts have in common? They're all forms of textile crafts! Every Wednesday, join the Homeplace for a deep dive into one of the myriad textile crafts that contributed to the creation of fabrics that were a common sight on an 1850s farm.

Does your child love history, nature, or just being outside? Are they between the ages of 8 and 12? Then we have an experience they'll never forget! New in 2025 is our youth program, Junior Ranger Mornings. This morning will focus on history, highlighting the historical significance of Johnsonville, TN.

Your child will love learning about the lives of Civil War soldiers, and will also learn about nature while being active in the outdoors!

$10/participant. Includes all program supplies. Program limited to 10 Junior Rangers. Junior Rangers must be between the ages of 8 and 12, and must turn 8 in 2025 to be eligible to register. Parent supervision is not required. Clothing should be appropriate for summer weather, exposure to the sun, with closed toe shoes. Water bottle recommended. Sunscreen and bug spray will be provided by Park staff.

This Labor Day weekend, August 30-31, the Homeplace is celebrating the hard labor and hand work skills of our ancestors during our Trades Fair. At a time when few things were manufactured, people had to rely on their skills or their neighbors to produce everything from knitted socks to horseshoes. Visit this weekend with local traditional trades and craft people as they share their skills and knowledge of these lost folk arts. Hand crafted items will be available for purchase.

Hop on the Moneymaker Trail during Thanksgiving week and crank out this fun challenge by running, biking, or walking on a full belly! Beginning November 22nd, the Moneymaker Trail will be marked off with a start line and finish line for a 1.5-mile trail. Ride it, walk it, or run it as many times as you'd like during November 22nd-30th, and mark your time down on the leaderboard (there will be better markers this year). This friendly competition is a way to get out and get active during the Thanksgiving holiday!
