CANAL TO LAKE BARKLEY

The Barkley Canal is located just behond Mile 24.8. This free flowing canal (approx. one mile long) connecting Kentucky Lake with Lake Barkley provides easy navigation between the two lakes. You will see the bridge of Highway 453 (The Trace) extending above the canal. This road is the Northern entrance of Land Between the Lakes (LBL), one of the nations largest inland peninsulas. This recreational area, up to eight miles wide, separates Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. LBL was developed by President Kennedy in 1963 for recreational use and an environmental education area encompassing 170,000 acres of outdoor recreation.  LBL has great opportunities for boaters, campers and hikers because of its 300 miles of beautiful undeveloped shoreline, secluded coves, 54 different kinds of mammals and 230 species of bird many of which many are endangered species such as American bison, bald eagles, osprey, elk, red wolves, and river otters, picnic areas, campsites, 250 miles of trails for hiking, biking and OHV, 300 miles of back country roads and much, much more.

From the canal, heading upstream (South), LBL will border the eastern shore of Kentucky Lake for about 40 miles providing many secluded, undeveloped bays suitable for dropping anchor for the night.  Most of these bays are large enough to enjoy fishing, swimming, tubing and skiing.
